LOS ANGELES: James Burrows, one of television’s most influential comedy directors whose work helped shape some of the most beloved sitcoms in TV history, has died at the age of 85.
According to a statement released by his family, Burrows passed away peacefully on Friday while surrounded by loved ones. The family did not disclose the cause of death or where he died.
Widely regarded as a master of the sitcom format, Burrows spent more than five decades behind the camera, directing over 1,000 television episodes and helping create many of the laughs that defined American television. Although his name was not widely known to audiences, his creative influence was felt across generations of viewers.

Burrows began his television directing career in 1974 at the age of 35, working on popular comedy series such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, and Laverne & Shirley. His breakthrough came with Cheers, the iconic Boston-set sitcom that became one of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time.
As a co-creator and director of Cheers, Burrows directed 243 of the show’s 273 episodes, playing a key role in establishing its signature style and comedic rhythm. He later directed every one of the 246 episodes of Will & Grace, further cementing his reputation as one of television’s premier comedy directors.
His remarkable résumé also included directing episodes of hit shows such as Frasier, Friends, and Mike & Molly. In addition, Burrows directed the pilot episodes of future television giants Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, helping launch series that would become global successes.
Throughout his career, Burrows earned widespread respect from actors, writers, and producers for his ability to bring out strong comedic performances and create enduring television moments. His work left a lasting mark on the sitcom genre and continues to influence television comedy today.
With his passing, the entertainment industry loses a pioneering director whose contributions helped define modern television comedy for millions of viewers around the world.
